CraftWhy we still use hand tools (and when we don't)
Where a sharp plane or chisel still beats any machine, and where modern machinery is simply the better tool.
In a world of CNC routers and automation, reaching for a hand plane or chisel can look old-fashioned. But hand tools still play an essential part in our workshop, alongside the machines we use every day.
Where hand tools still win
Precision with feel
Hand tools let us work with the timber, not just on it. Planing a surface or paring a joint by hand gives a kind of feedback no machine can: you feel the grain, the resistance and when the cut is right.
Finish and finesse
A finely set hand plane can leave a glassy surface that needs little or no sanding. A sharp chisel can clean out a corner that a router bit will always leave rounded. In bespoke work the smallest details are the ones people notice.
Flexibility on site
Not everything happens in the workshop. Fitting joinery into an old building with out-of-square walls and uneven floors needs scribing and adjusting by eye, and nothing adapts as quickly as a good eye and a sharp hand tool.
Where machines are the right choice
We're not purists. Machines make sense:
- For accuracy and repeatability. Panel saws, routers and track saws give clean, square components every time.
- For efficiency. If we're cutting thirty identical cabinet sides, doing it by hand isn't a good use of anyone's time or budget.
- For heavy work. Machinery takes the strain out of repetitive jobs like preparing rough-sawn boards or breaking down sheet materials.
Machines don't replace skill. They free up our time for the parts of a project where skill matters most: the joints, the fit and the finish.
It's not either/or, it's balance
The best results come from knowing when to use each. Machines for accuracy and efficiency, hand tools for refinement and fitting. It isn't nostalgia. It's using the right tool for the job, and knowing that sometimes the slower way is the better way.
